While emphasis is placed on academics, we also try our utmost to help mould our learners into well-rounded, well-mannered individuals who can hold their own academically, culturally and out on the sports field.

Library

Westering learners are offered every opportunity to grow and encourage their love of reading, as well as learn how to research topics. Miss Potgieter, our librarian, manages our library with over 10 000 books. Students have a timetabled library lesson where they can exchange books. The library is also open during breaktimes, where Miss Potgieter and her team of Grade 7 librarians assist students visiting the library.

Multipurpose Arena

Our multi-purpose arena was built in 2019. It comprises of a smaller full-length hockey field, four mini hockey fields and the multi-purpose features of the arena have also allowed for two full-sized tennis courts and two standard netball courts. A variety of sporting codes are able to make use of this facility. The multi-purpose arena has created a beautiful aesthetic environment that is pleasing to the eye. Our children have wonderful opportunities awaiting them and the benefits from training and making use of this facility cannot be measured. We are one of the few primary schools in the city fortunate enough to enjoy such facilities. We are very proud of this.

Fields

With the introduction of borehole water and a very dedicated maintenance team, Westering has managed to keep our fields in tip top shape for all the sporting codes.

This part of our school is used non-stop and is a hive of activity throughout the year. It is also a place where parents get to become a real part of the Westering Family as they support their children from the side lines.

Music Room

Westering Primary boasts an exciting and thriving Music Department. The Music staff are passionate about Music and strive to provide enjoyable, and interactive lessons for our pupils. Westering Primary offers tuition in Piano, Acoustic Guitar, Recorder, Flute and the Drum Kit.

There are various instruments available to hire, while it is preferable that Piano, Guitar and Drum students have their own respective instruments at home to play on.

Westering has two Choirs. Our Junior Choir caters for Grade 1-3 students and focuses on basic vocal training and exercises, fun songs and introduces basic harmony.

Our Senior Choir is for the Grade 4 – 7 students and practices twice a week. We focus on two-part harmonies, while exploring the students vocal ranges and vocal group exercises. Our choirs enthusiastically perform at Awards ceremonies, School Assemblies, Choir Festivals, and our Annual Carol Evening.

Westering also has a Percussion Ensemble comprised of the more advanced music students. They play popular instrumental songs, and the learners are taught the basics of playing in a group setting. The learners are encouraged to explore improvisation and have in the past composed their own short pieces.

Jungle Gyms

Westering Primary is one of the few schools that boasts an expansive playground for their Grade 1, 2 and 3 learners. We have a large jungle gym, climbing wall, grass area, boat and train structure. The playground creates an opportunity for the learners to practice their balancing, build upper body strength and engage in imaginative play.  The learners make the most of the open space to run and tumble.  We are fortunate to be able to allow our learners this opportunity to play and explore.

Computer Lab

The Computer Lab is equipped with 34 computer stations and a projector used for instruction. It is a modern, fun space where Miss Njadayi helps our students develop their technological and research skills in a safe, guided manner.

Art Room

It is important to us that students are offered every opportunity to grow in all aspects of their lives, including their creative and artistic qualities.

Our spacious Art Room is a place which is always humming with cheerful, imaginative activity. Mrs Erasmus, our Art teacher, takes pleasure in helping our budding artists develop confidence and appreciation for all facets of Art.

The fruits of their labour can be seen hanging on the walls throughout our school.

Practice Nets

Westering Primary School boasts some of the best training facilities in Gqeberha. Westering has 5 top class artificial cricket nets that are perfect for all cricketers looking to learn the game or hone their skills further. These nets are often a hive of entertainment and filled with aspiring young future provincial and national representatives.

Aftercare

The aim of our aftercare is to create a safe, well disciplined, happy environment for our children to spend their afternoons in.

We have 8 experienced ladies looking after, on average, 160 children.

Each grade has an allocated aftercare lady and room. A supervised homework session is also set aside each day from Monday to Thursday for Grade 3 – 7.

To apply for aftercare, parents are requested to send an email to aftercare@westering.co.za. A link will then be forwarded to you via return email. Please note that space is limited.

General

Our Governing Body have been hard at work ensuring that our school is not only functional but also progressive.

The Grade 4 – 7 classrooms have all been fitted with interactive whiteboards, helping our teachers keep up to date with new and exciting teaching advancements.

2020 saw our school add solar panels to help reduce our electricity bill and manage the effects of load shedding.

In 2021, we added water tanks and pumps to ensure we stayed environmentally conscious and prepared for any water outages.

We were fortunate to have built our school shop, new ablution facilities, a new classroom and also extended the staff room in 2023 & 2024.

We look forward to seeing what advancements 2025 bring the Westering Family.
